Hosea's Redemptive Marriage

Yahuah commanded Hosea to marry an unfaithful woman named Gomer — a living parable of Yahuah's relentless love for unfaithful Israel.

The Story

Yahuah gave Hosea the most painful assignment any prophet ever received: 'Go, take yourself a wife of harlotry and children of harlotry, for the land has committed great harlotry by departing from Yahuah.'

Hosea married Gomer, and she bore him children. But Gomer was unfaithful. She left Hosea and returned to her former lovers, eventually ending up on a slave block — broken, degraded, and for sale.

Yahuah told Hosea: 'Go again, love a woman who is loved by a lover and is committing adultery, just like the love of Yahuah for the children of Israel.' Hosea went and bought Gomer back — he redeemed her from slavery with fifteen shekels of silver and some barley.

This entire marriage was a living parable. Gomer represented Israel, who had abandoned Yahuah to worship false elohim. Hosea represented Yahuah, who pursued His unfaithful people with relentless, costly love.

Through Hosea, Yahuah declared: 'I desire mercy and not sacrifice, and the knowledge of Elohim more than burnt offerings.' And: 'I will betroth you to Me forever; yes, I will betroth you to Me in righteousness and justice, in lovingkindness and mercy.'

The story of Hosea and Gomer is the story of every believer — we were unfaithful, and Yahuah bought us back at great cost through Yahusha HaMashiach.
